A bedroom should be more than a place a bed happens to be.
By Philly Lyus, NZ-acclaimed Interior Designer
It should be a room you love to retreat to - a space that feels comforting, calming and entirely your own. Somewhere you can switch off at the end of the day, linger on a slow morning, curl up with a book, or simply enjoy being surrounded by things that make you feel good.
So what turns a bedroom into a sanctuary?
1. It starts with the bed
The bed is, of course, the heart of the room. Comfort matters, but so does the quality of everything you put around you.
A beautiful, supportive bed paired with lovely bedlinen and carefully chosen inners can completely change how a bedroom feels. There's something wonderfully inviting about getting into a bed that feels generous, comfortable and considered. It should offer the perfect level of comfort for you to melt into, so you get the restful sleep you need to reset.
2. Never underestimate the lighting
A sanctuary needs more than one light source.
Soft, warm lighting creates an entirely different atmosphere from a bright overhead light. Bedside lamps, wall lights, table lamps and even a small reading light give you options depending on the mood. The ability to dim the room and create pools of gentle light is one of the simplest ways to make a bedroom feel instantly more relaxing.
3. Choose a colour palette that feels personal
A sanctuary should feel like you. Whether that means vibrant colours, strong artworks and pieces you love, or a softer monochromatic palette, choose a scheme that makes you feel calm, comfortable and inspired. The most important thing is that your bedroom feels personal — a space you genuinely enjoy retreating to at the end of the day.
4. Create darkness for better sleep
Good sleep is at the heart of a bedroom sanctuary, and studies show that darkness triggers thebrain's pineal gland to produce melatonin, the natural hormone that promotes sleepiness. Light exposure stops this process.
Blockout blinds, curtains or shutters help create a darker, more restful environment, keeping unwanted light out and making it easier to switch off. Layering window treatments also adds softness and warmth, helping the room feel more cocooning and private. And a beautiful curtain or shutter brings a touch of luxury and depth to the space.
Take your sanctuary beyond the bed by creating a cosy corner where you can curl up with a book, meditate or simply enjoy a quiet moment. A comfortable chair in the corner. A beautiful bedside table. A favourite artwork. Books within reach. A scent you love. Fresh flowers. A place to sit with your morning coffee. Somewhere to pause, recharge and escape the everyday.
Make it a room you love to be in, not just sleep in. Give yourself reasons to enjoy being there.
These small details transform a bedroom from somewhere functional into somewhere personal - because a true bedroom sanctuary isn't just about getting a good night's sleep. It's about how the room makes you feel. It should welcome you at the end of a long day, encourage you to slow down, and make you want to linger a little longer in the morning.
