Back in 2021, when Comfi was a newborn bed business finding its feet, we wrote about the thousands of sheep helping Kiwis get a better night's sleep.

Five years later, quite a lot has changed. Comfi has grown, our mattress range has grown, but one thing hasn't: there's still a layer of pure New Zealand wool inside every mattress we make. These days, that wool comes from Rathmoy Farm, a working sheep and beef farm near Hunterville, run by a family committed to a regenerative, land-conscious approach to farming.

It is exactly the sort of place we want the wool inside a Comfi mattress to come from.

Why do we put wool in a mattress?

Not simply because it gives us a lovely paddock-to-pillow story, although it certainly does that rather well.

We use New Zealand wool because it is an exceptionally clever natural material.

Wool helps manage moisture and temperature, absorbing and releasing moisture vapour as conditions change. This helps create a more comfortable sleeping environment without relying on synthetic “cooling technology” or fabrics with names that sound as though they belong on a spacecraft.

It is also naturally renewable. Sheep grow a new fleece every year, turning sunshine, grass and water into a strong, durable fibre.

Every Comfi mattress contains a layer of pure, sustainable New Zealand wool, working alongside our breathable comfort layers and pocket-spring systems to create a bed that feels comfortable without becoming a heat-trapping foam fortress.

What buying a Comfi supports

For us, choosing New Zealand wool has never been a marketing decoration to sprinkle over a product description.

It is part of a much bigger decision about the kind of business we want Comfi to be.

It means supporting New Zealand farming families and keeping more of our supply chain close to home. It means using a traceable, renewable natural material in every mattress. It means continuing to have our beds made here in New Zealand rather than vacuum-packing an imported mattress into a box and hoping for the best.

And our responsibility does not end once a bed leaves the factory.

For every five Comfi beds sold, we donate a complete sleep solution to a Kiwi family in need through our charity partners. We have also partnered with All Heart NZ to help recycle and responsibly dismantle old mattresses rather than sending them directly to landfill.

We believe a good mattress should support local farmers, New Zealand manufacturing, vulnerable families and better environmental choices too.

From the farm to your bedroom

We want to make beds from materials we understand, sourced from people and places we can stand behind.

So, when you climb into a Comfi mattress, somewhere beneath you is a layer of beautiful New Zealand wool — grown by farmers who care as much about the land as they do about the fleece.

The sheep themselves, of course, remain out on the farm. They need their sleep too.
