We spend 26 years of our lives sleeping but tend to choose our beds based on a few minutes sprawled on a mattress in some big-box retailer. Buy online and you’re potentially taking an even bigger punt. For best friends Vicki Eriksen and Susie Harris, the experience of trying to buy beds online during the first Covid lockdown was so frustrating they launched their own company, Comfi. For a start they keep it simple, offering a choice between a non-pillow-top mattress and a more luxurious pillow-top version, both made in New Zealand using quality Taupō-sourced wool. Recognising that it takes time to settle into a new mattress – Eriksen compares it to breaking in a pair of trainers – the company also offers a 100-night trial. And for customers who just can’t click “buy” until they’ve tried a bed in store, there’s an Auckland showroom where they can go full Goldilocks. Comfi is also New Zealand’s first online bed retailer with a social purpose, donating one complete “sleep solution”, including new base, mattress and pillow, to a child in need, for every five beds sold.
